Recently readers of Off Road magazine named the BMW X3 "Off-Road Vehicle of the Year 2011". However, the X3 is already claiming another success. After taking a solid lead in a reader survey conducted by Europe's best-selling specialist journal for four-wheel drive cars, Auto Bild Allrad, the luxury SUV earned the prestigious designation of "Four-Wheel Drive Car of the Year 2011".
This was the eleventh survey conducted by Auto Bild Allrad. This year Auto Bild Allrad asked its readers choose from among 130-plus competitors, in nine different categories. Considering the extensive competition, BMW's leadership position is highly impressive...even more so given its history of winning the titles. That's right, the predecessors of the new BMW X3 also earned readers' favor in 2006 and 2007.
Since first using early models of the BMW X3 to establish the concept of a Sports Utility Vehicle within the luxury realm, the German automaker has enhanced the overall comfort and performance of the award-winning SUV. The new X3, for example, offers more generous passenger and cargo space, even more efficient engines, enhanced driving comfort, and an expanded array of innovative equipment features.
As you might expect, the luxury SUV is receiving applause on this side of the pond as well. In a recent review, New York Times editor Lawrence Ulrich raved about the BMW X3's performance, which he says tops that of every other crossover in its class, "If you've got the dough, the X3 is hard to beat as a high-jolt family car. It's manageable for empty nesters, but just big enough for married couples with one or two children. It is unimpeachably fashionable, but within the tasteful spectrum of curbside radar. And being a BMW, it goes like the dickens."1
