Not too long ago rumors began to circulate that BMW was creating an eco-friendly vehicle that boasted high performance and class. So can this combination really exist? BMW believes it can and to prove it they launched the "i" division that will be dedicated to eco-friendly vehicles. In preparing to officially launch the new i sub-brand, BMW recently premiered the pure-electric i3 concept in Frankfurt, Germany.
The new BMW i3 is engineered using BMW's design philosophy, "LifeDrive". What does this mean? Well, the "Life", or exterior of the car, is built using lightweight, exceptionally strong carbon fiber. The "Drive", or powertrain of the vehicle, features a 170-horsepower (hp), electric engine boasting a range of approximately 93 miles per charge and max torque output of 184 lbs.-ft.
The LifeDrive philosophy delivers exceptional performance and efficiency. The i3 will be able to accelerate from zero to 37 miles per hour in less than four seconds, and from zero to 60 miles per hour in under eight seconds.
Now, before you jump to any hasty conclusions, remember the BMW i3 concept is meant for urban commuters. As such, BMW has spent less time focusing on sprint time than it has in the i8 concept.
