BMW's new Vision ConnectedDrive concept car presents the automobile as a fully integrated part of the networked world. Via cutting-edge design and innovative technology the out-of-the-box study demonstrates the potential of current and forthcoming in-car technology for optimizing comfort, safety, and infotainment.
The design behind the BMW Vision ConnectedDrive uses a distinctive layering principle to demonstrate the bond between the driver, passenger, vehicle, and environment. This is illustrated by a complex fiber optic light installation that traces the path of data exchange with the driver and passenger at the start and end of each interaction.
The first layer of the BMW Vision ConnectedDrive concept car is safety. This is designated by a red light wrapping around the driver and meeting in a cone on the hood. The second layer defined by a blue light that encompasses the first layer and extends to the passenger cell, focuses on infotainment and more specifically fostering social exchange between the driver and passenger. The third layer distinguished by a green light flow, focuses on the interaction between the vehicle and its surrounding environment.
Each level of the BMW Vision ConnectedDrive concept car is responsible for internalizing a multitude of data and communicating it with the driver. The headlights and rear lights, for example, are integrated with sensors monitoring the traffic and surrounding environment. The car directly feeds this information to the driver so that they can then take appropriate action.
BMW has also equipped the Vision ConnectedDrive concept with Advanced Head-Up Display. Beyond the technology available in current BMWs, Advanced Head-Up Display eliminates the need for drivers' eyes to refocus, by placing a three-dimensional display of key information, right in their line of vision. And, for the first time ever, passengers get their own information display! Out of the drivers' field of vision, this allows passengers to evaluate information, music or navigation details and pass them on to the driver with a simple touch of the finger.
