We at Autohaus BMW were excited to see the new redesigned 1 Series unveiled, along with the new M5, M3 GTS Sedan, and I3 at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show, and still are. However, we no long need to wait for details on the 1 Series. As you may already be aware, images of the new 2012 BMW 1 Series recently leaked onto the Internet. So what did BMW do? They decided to release some details and tell all. So here they are.
In its second-generation form, the all-new 2012 1 Series, code named F20, will continue to be the only rear-wheel drive model in its class. But, that's about all it has in common with its E81 predecessor.
The new 2012 1 Series is based on the same platform as the 3 Series, offering greater passenger and cargo space than the E81 it will replace. And for the first time ever, all the petrol and diesel engines will feature new BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.
2012 BMW 1 Series' New-Generation of 1.6-Liter Petrol Engines
- BMW 116i - 100 kW/136 hp- BMW118i - 125 kW/170 hp
2012 BMW 1 Series' Redesigned of 2.0-Liter Diesel Engines
- BMW 116d - 85 kW/116 hp- BMW 118d - 105 kW/143 hp
- BMW 120d - 135 kW/184 hp
The new 1 Series also maintains the Bavarian automaker's position as an industry innovator with its BMW EfficientDynamics technology. It is, in fact, the first car in its segment with an optional eight-speed automatic transmission, Automatic Start-Stop function in both manual and automatic transmissions, and standard ECO PRO mode activated by a driving-experience switch.
2012 BMW 1 Series' Fuel-Efficient 1.6-Liter Diesel Engine
- BMW 116d EfficientDynamics Edition (featuring additional fuel-saving technologies to keep CO2 emissions over the EU testing cycle at just 99 g/km) - 85-kW/116-hpTo further improve the 1 Series driving experience, BMW has integrated the new 'F20' with a highly torsion-resistant body for enhanced responsiveness and passenger protection, as well as a more comfortable and convenient cock pit. BMW Connected Drive, for example, will offer 1 Series drivers a suite of optional driver-assistance programs and mobility services, including: high-beam assistance, Adaptive Headlights, parking assistance, rear-view camera, Lane Departure Warning including Collision Warning, cruise control with brake function, speed-limit and no-passing information, Internet connectivity, increased smartphone and media player integration, real-time traffic updates and entertainment apps (i.e., Web radio, Twitter, and Facebook).
"BMW's entry-level model has achieved maturity, offering an even better balance between sportiness and driving comfort, improved functionality, and numerous driving assistance systems previously available only in higher segments." says BMW. "...The design of the new generation is a powerful expression of the latest technological advances. The model's fresh, youthful image has been stylishly updated, with precision-moulded body surfaces and a modern, functional interior both underlining its premium status."1
