Despite skyrocketing gas prices and increase in earth-damaging vehicle emissions, many consumers still aren't convinced that electric mobility will become a staple in the future. BMW disagrees. That's why the automaker is putting extraordinary effort into the future of its electric vehicle offerings. Example number one: the BMW ActiveE.

Just this month, the innovative automaker delivered its first ActiveE model to U.S. Electronauts Tom and Meredith Maloughney. Wondering what in the world an "Electronaut" is? Well, just as an astronaut explore outer space, Electronauts pioneer the realm of electrics. Specifically, the term was created by BMW for consumers who take on the task of driving the ActiveE throughout a two-year trial run. At the end of the Electronauts' mission, BMW will gather data regarding the driver/vehicle experience and use it in the development of further electric vehicles.

Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO of BMW North America, says, "Calling the Moloughneys Pioneers is very appropriate because they have shown the world that an electric vehicle can absolutely serve one's daily driving needs without compromise."1

While Tom and Meredith may hold credit as the first United States-based Electronauts, many others will soon respond to the admirable call of duty. In fact, 200 BMW lovers will receive keys to ActiveE models and partake in the two-year trial run.

For those who prefer to support the BMW mission from the sidelines rather than in the field, Autohaus BMW has plenty of other new BMW models to choose from at 3015 S. Hanley Rd. Saint Louis, MO 63143-3613. Our brand ambassadors are more than willing to go over vehicle specs or set you up with a test drive. And for those pioneers who have chosen to take on the Electronaut mission, we have one thing to say: may the electric force be with you!
