Back in 2004, BMW released the BMW X3 and with it, a set of luxury crossover standards from which the model would be defined. Now, the automaker has decided to add efficiency to comfort, class and agility with a fuel-efficient, TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine (N20) offering.

Currently featured in the 2012 BMW Z4 sports car, 2012 BMW 528i and 2012 BMW 328i, the N20 and its new integration into the X3 xDrive28i will further the cause of the automaker's EfficientDynamics Strategy. In a recent press release, company officials note that the powertrain offering "will now be available providing more agility, efficiency and comfort in the class segment that the X3 started."1

Arriving in tandem with the new X3 engine, comes a host of technology updates for both the X3 xDrive28i and xDrive35i models. These features include standard Auto Start Stop and Driving Dynamics Control with ECO PRO and the Power Tailgate. In addition, the 2013 xDrive28i will receive 18-inch wheels and chrome tailpipes which were previously only given to the xDrive35i.

So, the big question remains, When will we see these updates? Unfortunately, BMW hasn't offered up an exact date quite yet. However, the new engine will move to production next month and Autohaus BMW is guessing the revamped X3 models will arrive at 3015 S. Hanley Rd. Saint Louis, MO 63143-3613 sometime this summer or early fall. In the meantime, feel free to check out our current X3 offerings as well as our complete lineup of new BMW models.
