If you're an auto buff you likely know that when it comes to efficiency, 3-cylinder engines are where it's at. And, as it turns out, BMW is acknowledging this by putting forth a new range of three-cylinders known as the I-3. And, ever since it was announced enthusiasts have been wondering if the new powerplants would make their way to the U.S.
And today, Autohaus BMW is happy to officially announce that yes they will. And what's more, experts already have a pretty good inkling about which new BMW models the small engine will be debut in. Specifically, we're looking at the range-extended i8 sports car as well as several other Mini models. Additionally, several forthcoming hybrid models are slated to receive the new 3-cylinder as well.
The most interesting part, is that the tiny new engine is actually based off the well-known 3.0-liter V6, and shares a lot of its makeup. But, as Dr. Bernardo Lopez Alvaredo, Powertrain Head of Function Operation Evaluation for BMW puts it "The 3-cylinder has its own character and sounds, doesn't make you think it's a 3-cylinder engine."1
Well, we're certainly excited to see what these new petite engines will have to offer. If you're interested in more BMW news
